Dental Checkups & Professional Teeth Cleanings

The backbone of every oral health care plan is twice a year dental checkups and teeth cleanings with our skilled team. Each six month checkup starts with diagnostic evaluation using state-of-the-art digital x-rays. During the checkup, we offer gentle, attentive examination of every smile screening for oral cancer, tooth decay, gum disease, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching. Then, our skilled hygienists carefully remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from every tooth surface to restore and preserve oral health. Finally, our dentists meet one-on-one with each patient to discuss the results of our thorough oral health assessment and screenings. We’re happy to answer questions throughout any appointment, but this consultation time is a great opportunity to ask our team questions, express concerns, and create a plan for future care.

Dental Sealants

Regarded by the American Dental Association as one of the easiest ways to protect teeth from harmful bacteria and acidic plaque, dental sealants can be placed during any regular dental checkup. Many dentists offer sealants exclusively to younger patients as they tend to be at higher risk for tooth decay than adults. However, patients of any age who demonstrate even a slight risk for tooth decay should receive dental sealants. The process is simple, affordable, and non-invasive. A thin layer of liquid sealant is brushed onto teeth. A curing light hardens the sealant onto teeth creating a clear coat of enamel protection that lasts many years with regular checkups and cleanings. Patients should consider dental sealants if:

  • They experience more than one cavity a year
  • They suffer from bruxism and teeth show signs of wear making them more susceptible to decay
  • They have extensive fillings, crowns, bridges, or other restorations that make decay more likely
  • They are young children learning to properly care for their smiles
  • Children or adults unable to adequately clean teeth
  • Adults with dry mouth who will always be more prone to tooth decay

Topical Fluoride Application

The American Dental Association recommends that those with moderate and severe tooth decay risk at least receive twice-yearly applications of topical fluoride applications in order to prevent tooth decay. This excellent, conservative treatment can significantly reduce the risk of forming cavities in both children and adults. A few of the risk factors that result in at least a moderate risk for forming dental cavities include:

  • The presence of existing cavities or broken teeth
  • Dry mouth
  • Exposed tooth root surfaces (gum recession)
  • High sugar diet
  • Use of certain medications
  • Crooked teeth
  • Acid reflex (GERD)

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal disease (gum infection) is one of the most common oral health concerns affecting more than half of US adults over 30. While we work with patients at Columbian Square Dental to prevent this pervasive disease, for those who do suffer from it, we offer a number of proven periodontal therapies to arrest the disease before it causes continued and irreversible damage resulting in tooth and jaw bone loss.

  • Home care equipment, products, and education
  • Scaling and root planning (the removal of plaque and tartar buildup below the gum line as well as smoothing of the infected roots)
  • Surgical procedures in moderate to severe cases
  • Gum and tooth replacement therapy

Oral Cancer Screenings

On average, one person each hour in the US dies from oral cancer, and of those diagnosed this year, statistics indicate that less than half will live more than five years. At Columbian Square Dental, our dentists and team are dedicated to reducing the number of oral cancer related deaths through early diagnosis and treatment. During every six month checkup, we complete an examination of the face, lips, neck, throat, and mouth looking for the early warning signs of oral cancer that many doctors are not trained to detect. This exam looks for the following:

  • Discolored spots (usually white or red)
  • Sores that do not heal within a week
  • Lumps or unusual texture
  • Persistent sore throat or cough
  • Tingling or numbness

If we notice any symptoms of oral cancer, we’ll recommend patients receive a biopsy right away and begin treatment as soon as possible.

Children’s Dentistry

We encourage patients to bring their children to our dental office. We offer a number of treatment options directly catered toward developing smiles including dental sealants, athletic mouthguards, wisdom tooth evaluation and extraction, and more. We love treating whole families. If you have a young child (under age 3), we invite you to bring him or her along on your regular checkup in order to allow your little one to get used to the sights and sounds of the dental office.

Nightguards for Treating TMJ & Bruxism

Those patients who grind and clench their teeth at night may be suffering from bruxism. This unconscious movement leads to untold damage if left untreated including strain of the joints that connect the jaw to the skull. These are the temporomandibular joints (‘TMJ’ for short), and excessive, consistent pressure on the TMJ leads to a painful and possibly debilitating oral health concern known as TMJ disorder. Nightguards for bruxism simply place a layer of material between teeth preventing potential damage. Nightguards for the treatment of TMJ disorder are crafted to remove excess strain from the TMJ and relieve the pain and discomfort associated with this dysfunction.

Digital Radiography

Traditional x-rays offer a glimpse into the inner workings of patients’ smiles, but they expose people to a great deal of radiation, take a long period of time to capture, are of low quality, and required hazardous chemicals harmful to the environment to develop

Columbian Square Dental is proud to utilize digital x-rays to provide higher definition images available instantly on a chairside computer monitor for our team to examine and discuss with our patients. Better yet, capturing digital scans is faster and exposes patients to 90% less radiation. Digital x-rays completely eliminate the need to develop radiographs using hazardous chemicals and since the files are digitally transferred between computers, they require no extra space for storage and are easy to share with patients, specialists, or insurance companies, when necessary.

Athletic Sportsguards

You probably wouldn’t play football or hockey without a mouthguard, but the odds are pretty good that you’d jump into a pool or ride a bike without one. However, the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Sports Medicine recommends people wear a sportsguard while engaging in any activity where they may come in contact with another person, sports equipment, or a hard surface. There are a variety of over the counter mouthguards available, but none compare to our custom fitted, comfortable sportsguards crafted from the highest quality, most effective protective materials. Ask about protecting your smile with a custom sportsguard during your next checkup.
